How to Replace the Developer Units on a Xerox AltaLink C80 Series: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updated: 4 days ago

If you’re working with a Xerox AltaLink C80 series model and need to replace the developer units, you’ve come to the right place! In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process step by step. Whether you’re a technician or just someone comfortable around printers, this guide is designed to make the process as smooth as possible.

Step 1: Get Ready to Open Things Up

First things first, let’s dive in. Begin by opening the cover on the Xerox machine. Once you’ve opened the main cover, locate and open the secondary tab, then unlock it to expose the inner components. You’ll notice that the drum units are visible at this point—these will need to come out before we can access the developer units.

Remove each drum unit carefully. Once those are out, you’ll need to remove the waste container and the IBT belt cleaner as well. Don’t worry—the toners can stay in place while we work.

Step 2: Removing the Covers and Screws

Now that we’re inside, it’s time to remove some screws. The Xerox AltaLink C80 series model has a lot of screws, so make sure you’ve got your tools ready. You’ll need to remove screws from several spots on the copier—there are six screws holding down the next section, plus a hidden screw you’ll need to get to once a flap is open.

Take your time to remove each screw. Once they’re all out, you’ll be able to lift off the cover. There’s also a fan unit that needs to come off. You’ll find a white tab to pinch, and it will come right out. Don’t forget to unplug it once it’s loose.

Step 3: Disconnect the Developer Units

Next up, we’re ready to start removing the developer units. You’ll see four developer plugs—one for each color (black, cyan, magenta, yellow). Unplug each one, and make sure to keep track of them. There’s also a blue PWB board with two screws. Take those out to remove the board.

Once the board is off, you’ll see a black auger piece that needs to be removed. This is held in by three screws—one on the left and two on the right. Once the screws are out, lift the piece up gently.

Step 4: Removing and Replacing the Developer

Now we’re at the heart of the operation: removing the developer units. You’ll notice four colors: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. Let’s focus on the black unit for now. There’s a tab that’s holding it in place—lift it up to release the developer. There are also two screws that need to be removed from the bracket holding the developer in place.

Once the screws are out, pull the developer out along with the bracket. If you’re installing a new unit, simply remove the old bracket and attach it to the new developer.

Step 5: Reinstallation and Final Touches

Time to put everything back together. Place the new developer in position and make sure the bracket lines up properly. Tighten the screws to secure the bracket, and make sure the guide tabs are back in place. You should hear a slight snap to confirm everything is properly aligned.

Once the developer is in place, reinstall the black auger piece, threading the wires back through as needed. Secure it with the screws you removed earlier. Then reinstall the PWB board, making sure to line it up with the guide points.

After reconnecting the developer plugs and the fan, it’s time to close things up. Reattach all the covers, and make sure every screw goes back in its original spot. Finish by securing the front cover, tightening the screws, and making sure the waste container and cleaning blade are back in place.

You’re Done!

That’s it. You’ve successfully replaced the developer units on your Xerox AltaLink C80 series model. While this might seem like a lot of steps, taking your time and following each one carefully ensures your machine will be up and running smoothly.
